Lest We Forget

We are approaching November 11th, a time when we pause to give thanks for the men and women who have fought and died for our freedom. As far back as I can remember we have always paused in school for 1 minute of silence, laid a wreath at our school assembly, sang O Canada and God Save the Queen and created some sort of craft or artistic expression of the sacrifice made for us.

For me, this was always centred around the second World War. It was fresh in my Grandmother’s memories so it was reinforced in our conversation. And for some reason, I thought that WW II was the end of war. Of course I was wrong. War has been plaguing society for as long as humans have walked the earth and continues to rage as I write this. Men and women TODAY are fighting for the rights of those who are most victimized by war even if they don’t live in our city or province. There is still fighting and there is still defending.

As a Christian I struggle with war. I hope everyone struggles with war…it’s nasty and deadly and no one really wins when you look at the costs. Some argue that the commandment “Thou Shall Not Kill” (Exodus 20:13) does not extend to war but rather to pre-meditated murder. In the book of Numbers, Deuteronomy and 1 Samuel, the Israelites are to take war on the Midianites and the Amalekites, but I don’t see Jesus asking us to war on anyone.  But He does ask us to care for neighbour. In fact his greatest commandment is to love God and love neighbour. When we see a young boy whose family is feeling a war torn country, dead on the shores having drowned in the sea trying to escape the atrocities, we cannot stand by and do nothing. And the perpetrators do not care about lives, about human dignity or about compromise, what are we to do? What ARE we to do? I leave you with that question.

I am a big distance away, but CLOSE. I thoroughly enjoy your blogs !! You give real food for thought, and a deep introspection. My thought- usually I follow my NEED to act or defend or help. Sometimes not too comfortable, but I have trouble explaining the nudge that really isn’t from me. How can people continue to Hate and Abuse — in the end, they destroy their own !! Love, God bless you , Pearl
